The challenge
Assessing micro-combined heat and power requires a consistent comparison of generation costs, grid electricity and uncertain operating conditions over the system lifetime.
Contribution
The study developed a techno-economic methodology for micro gas turbines fueled by natural gas and a blend containing 23% hydrogen by volume.
Approach
Measurements from a 3 kW turbine informed an IPSEpro process model. A 20-year levelized cost of electricity calculation and Monte Carlo analysis assessed cost distributions and sensitivity to input assumptions.
Results
For the study assumptions, the natural-gas case gave a levelized electricity cost of 1.42 NOK/kWh against a grid comparison of 2.54 NOK/kWh. In constant currency, the corresponding values were 1.19 and 1.78 NOK/kWh. These are study-specific results, not current energy prices. At full-load operation on natural gas, the original project summary reports 98% accuracy for the LCoE analysis.
