The challenge
Using CO₂ as cushion gas in underground natural-gas storage requires an assessment of investment costs, operating conditions and market uncertainty.
Contribution
The study evaluated Polish storage options through site selection, CAPEX and OPEX modeling, and sensitivity analysis.
Approach
Costs covered drilling, injection, gas processing and decommissioning. A Monte Carlo analysis with 10,000 iterations varied gas prices, electricity costs and technical parameters, alongside seasonal price differences and potential CO₂ storage benefits.
Results
Over 90% of the simulated scenarios produced a positive net present value under the study assumptions. High electricity prices and small seasonal gas-price differences were identified as important risks.
