The challenge
Thirasia depends on desalinated water, while fossil-fuel-based electricity makes its production costly. Solar integration needs both technical and financial evaluation.
Contribution
The project assessed the existing desalination plant and a 60 kW photovoltaic system connected through net metering, in collaboration with the municipal water utility of Thira and the University of Stavanger.
Approach
Python supported data cleaning and analysis. IPSEpro modeled membrane performance, pretreatment and load conditions, while meteorological records from 2007–2023 informed long-term solar resource assessment.
Results
The analysis supported evaluation of operating efficiency, solar generation and the economic feasibility of integrating renewable electricity into island water production.
